Similar to the creation of NZ Hunter magazine, Greg and Willie saw an opportunity, held a vision and backed themselves that they could make it happen. With a belief that no TV shows were capturing the true magnificence that New Zealand’s mountains and game animals had to offer, nor the real essence of wilderness hunting in New Zealand, they set about changing it. Familiar with cameras having produced popular hunting DVDs, but with no TV contract or sponsors, they embarked on a 12-month journey. They climbed and explored New Zealand’s mountains and wetlands to capture never before seen footage of a wide range of game animals in some truly incredible places. With the stunning result for Season 1 in the can and a belief that it must go on free to view TV, they worked hard to get a TV contract and sponsors to make the show happen.
Greg is one of the most passionate hunters you could ever meet; he is one of the most well-known NZ hunting personalities with huge credibility and anyone who knows him soon appreciates that hunting and the mountains are his life. Since learning to bush stalk self-taught in the Kaweka Ranges as a teenager, he has gone on to become a jack of all trades. He is highly competent in all aspects of hunting across NZ whether it be in the mountains hunting big game with rifle, bow or camera; on the water chasing waterfowl, or on the range building and shooting custom hunting rifles. His career seemed to follow a similar jack of all trades theme, having been a farmer, shearer, fencer, ag contractor, orchardist, viticulturist, writer and hunting guide all at the same time, before leaving them all behind seven years ago to start the successful NZ Hunter Magazine - which has gone on to be the number one selling outdoor magazine in the country. Greg fronts the TV show as the old hand with a vast knowledge of hunting and the NZ wilderness, and his goal is to showcase to the NZ public the magnificence on offer in our wilds - if only you are prepared to lose a bit of sweat!
Being born into the Duley family, hunting in his blood. It would be easy to think that Willie had no option other than to embrace the hunting culture he found himself in. But he believes just about anyone would become hooked on our mountains and game animals after witnessing what he has been privileged to see in the New Zealand back country. He has spent almost half his life in the mountains, and it was only natural that hunting would become his obsession. Learning his trade in the North Island backcountry, he then moved south to study at University followed by a corporate banking job, allowing him to leave his footprints across many a mountain and encounter many an animal in the wilds of the South Island. Chucking in his office job to front the show as the young-gun, he has spent more days in the hills than most and keeps Greg honest while learning a few tricks as they are passed down a generation.
