LOWA Renegade GTX MID Review - Mitchell Mawhinney

LOWA's Renegade GTX Mid is easily the best boot I've ever used, in all aspects. As a hiking guide, it's a real challenge to find the right pair of boots, one that has the durability to withstand a full season of hiking while also being comfortable enough to wear day in and day out. Last season, my Hi-Tecs, admittedly at a different price point, had fallen apart almost entirely half way through the season and caused me some serious foot pain at points.

The comfort of the Renegade GTX Mid has been revolutionary for me. Straight out of the box, I was extremely impressed. They aren't lying about not requiring a break-in period. Not a single blister was seen through the full season, while my toes and ankles were very well supported. While guiding, I'm on my feet for up to 12 hours a day. Comfort is an absolute necessity, and these boots delivered.

Without question, the most impressive thing about these boots from a guiding perspective is their unbelievable durability. I hiked approximately 1900 kilometres this season in this one pair of boots, and they remain not just intact but in pretty incredible condition, with only minimal wear really visible.

Comparing this not only to my last season's boots, but also the boots of my co-workers is very noteworthy. I had fellow guides go through 3 pairs of boots this season, while my first pair lasted the full season, no worries. That's 1900 km of tough, rocky, wet terrain across the Milford and Routeburn tracks that the Renegade GTX Mids have handled with ease.

These boots are an absolute all-rounder, with the remarkable waterproofing and grip making them a great choice for anyone looking to do more full-on hiking, but the everyday comfort and amazing durability also make them a great boot for a more casual hiker. Anybody who enjoys an adventure and wants more comfort and durability out of their footwear should do themselves a favour and grab a pair of LOWA Renegade GTX Mid. - Written by Mitchell Mawhinney
